Not A Drop To Drink..Ethanol Is Not The Answer People

*** Ethanol Taps Water Supplies
Interesting bit in the old Wall Street Journal about how much water ethanol uses and how it's creating some controversy in the Midwest. From the WSJ: "A 50-million gallon ethanol plant might use about 150 million gallons of water to make fuel. That's more water than some small towns use."
Now the fighting over water begins. Residents complain about low water levels in rivers and worry over the dropping water tables in aquifers. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
In other parts of the world, water remains a top resource priority. In Malaysia, there were reports of the discovery of an underground water cavern "the size of Singapore" that could help alleviate water shortages. Again, from the WSJ: "The discovery comes amid concerns that taps could run dry due to high population growth, polluted river basins and rapid industrialization." Of course, they'll need to build one heck of a pipeline.
It's just kind of interesting how we talk about and report on water these days. It reminds me of how people talk about oil. Here we are talking about water discoveries and pipeline projects. I think the water story will be with us for a long time yet. I'd love to find some cash-stuffed, cheap water-related company to add to the portfolio. Maybe if we get another market dive, we'll have a chance at one of them.
