House Members Seek to Raise Pay

House Democrats and Republicans are seeking a cost-of-living pay raise of $4,400, raising the annual salary for a member of the House to $170,000, according to The Associated Press.Democrats promised not to seek congressional pay raises until they had passed a minimum wage increase. In 1989, Congress made annual cost-of-living adjustments automatic unless members voted otherwise. Lawmakers shut down an attempt to block the pay raise Thursday.The economy only grew by 0.7 percent in the first quarter, the weakest growth in four years, according to Yahoo! Finance. Consumers continued to spend money despite a cautious stance from businesses.
