Jan 7, 2011
Leaked US Government documents show Australia’s intelligence agencies believe China is hiding the extent of its military build-up.
The documents obtained by Wikileaks reportedly show that Australian officials in the intelligence, defence and foreign affairs departments believe China’s military build up threatens regional stability.
A strategic assessment by the agencies claim China’s military spending for 2006 was $US90 billion, double the $45 billion budget that was publicly announced,
The officials also claim that China is building a military capability well beyond its defence priorities and poses a credible threat to other modern militaries operating in the region.
The documents warn the modernisation of China’s defence capabilities will present more formidable challenges in the future.
