Spot platinum hit a record high at $1,543.00 an ounce in Europe on Wednesday, tracking a rally in gold prices, traders said. The metal was quoted at $1,543/1,547 an ounce by 1503 GMT, compared with $1,520/1,525 in New York late on Monday. Gold surged to a 28-year high of $848.60 an ounce and hovered just below its record high of $850 hit in January 1980, as a fall in the dollar and strong oil prices triggered buying. -Reuters (Africa)
